Short cycling, cold blower air and the burnt smell you can't place
A system that short cycles, meaning it fires for a minute or two and shuts back off before the house ever warms, is usually a safety switch doing its job in response to a restriction somewhere in the airflow path rather than a switch that has itself gone bad. A blower motor that runs constantly without ever producing warm air points at the gas valve, the igniter or the flame sensor rather than the fan itself. On a heat pump, frost building up on the outdoor coil is normal in cold, damp weather, but a unit that never comes out of its own defrost cycle and keeps blowing cold air into the house needs a technician, not a thermostat reset.
